When I was a teenager, it seemed to be popular to turn verses of the KJV into choruses that we sang often. For some reason this doesn't seem to be as popular today in churches.
What I find 40 years later is that I know Proverbs 3:5-6 by heart because I used to sing it. I also remember frequently singing Habbakuk 3:17-18 (see below):
17 Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls:
18 Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation.
In my mind singing scripture is one more way to get the word of God from our heads into our hearts.

I feel the same way about Scripture-based songs. Some of the newer music certainly expresses sentiments that I can agree with, but they are less memorable and I prefer being a conduit for God's Word.
I have a lot of Maranatha! Music's Praise Album series on my MP3 player just for that reason.
A side note: MP3 players are a great blessing for their ability to contain my whole CD library favorites. In the Random/Shuffle mode, it is like having a radio station that plays all of my favorites with no commercial interruptions...!
